Canola Establishment – is it improved through the application of wetters to the seed in marginal conditions?
Project Start Date: January 2020
Project End Date: January 2022
Project Funding: Council of Grain Grower Organisations
Project Lead: Facey Group
Project Collaborators: DPIRD
Project Focus: To investigate the use of wetting agents, applied directly to canola seed to understand the impact it has on crop establishment and end of season yield in water repellent soils. The project will test the efficiency and profitability of directly coating wetter to seed compared to the current grower practice of furrow and banded treatments. In addition to a small plot on-ground trial, we aim to investigate the application and impact on seed viability in a laboratory setting; with a range of seed dressings (fungicide, insecticides and trace elements) and wetters to identify whether there is any compatibility issues with product, and determine if there is a time critical point for application prior to sowing.
